The Graston Technique is a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). This technique was developed by an athlete who was frustrated by the lack of rehabilitation progress after a knee injury.
Graston as well as other forms of IASTM are similar in a way to massage. They are both forms of soft-tissue mobilization, and therefore allow the practitioner to perform muscle work to promote healing. The only difference is that IASTM uses metal instruments to perform the work.
Using these instruments makes it easier to detect and treat any tightness in soft tissues and has a positive effect on pain in the area to facilitate therapeutic exercise. The use of an instrument focuses the forces through a smaller area than our fingers which allows for more efficient soft tissue work.
